The name Les Cèdres recalls the great cedars that grew at the foot of the St. Lawrence rapids, where travellers portaged; the cartographer Deshayes already mentions these rapids in 1695. The seigneury of Soulanges was granted in 1702, and a first chapel was built there in 1721. The current municipality was born in 1985 from the merger of the town of Les Cèdres and the parish of Saint-Joseph-de-Soulanges. Crossed by the Soulanges Canal, built from 1892 to 1899, it preserves the canal's former power plant, a classified historic monument, and numerous heritage homes.
