Coteau-du-Lac takes its name from a coteau, a slope, on the shore of Lac Saint-François, where a chain of islands and rapids blocked navigation on the St. Lawrence. A portage site used by Indigenous peoples for some 7,000 years, the site became a British military post where Canada's first lock canal was dug, now a national historic site. The municipal history begins in 1832 with the parish of Saint-Ignace; the parish and the village of Coteau-du-Lac, incorporated in 1907, merged on February 6, 1982, and the municipality obtained city status on October 13, 2007. Its blockhouse, the emblem of the city, now stands alongside an industrial park home to major companies.
