Living in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield

Located on Île de Salaberry and Grande Île, between Lac Saint-François, the St. Lawrence River and the Beauharnois Canal, Salaberry-de-Valleyfield is often called the “Venice of Quebec.” Its name honours Charles-Michel de Salaberry, victor of the Battle of Châteauguay in 1813, and recalls Valleyfield Mills, a Scottish paper mill that inspired Alexander Buntin, owner of the local paper mill. Renamed Montreal Cotton in 1875, the mill was for a long time the city's main employer. In 2002, Salaberry-de-Valleyfield merged with Grande-Île and Saint-Timothée; it has also been the seat of the Diocese of Valleyfield since 1892.
