The seat of the MRC de Beauharnois-Salaberry, today's city was born in 2002 from the merger of Beauharnois, Maple Grove and Melocheville. Its history is tied to water: the Beauharnois canal, dug from 1842 to 1845, and later the hydroelectric power station and the lock of the St. Lawrence Seaway. The old town centre, the waterfront areas along Lac Saint-Louis and the newer neighbourhoods attract families, retirees and commuters. Industry remains important, and an OVH data centre set up here in 2012 to take advantage of hydroelectric power.
