Les Coteaux was born in 1994 from the merger of two towns: Coteau-Landing, on the shores of Lac Saint-François, and Coteau-Station, north of Highway 20. Coteau-Landing, first called Anse-aux-Batteaux, had hosted a post for travellers since the late 17th century; around 1815, English soldiers and merchants renamed it Coteau-Landing, “landing” meaning a place to disembark, and in 1855 it became the seat of Soulanges County. Coteau-Station owes its existence to the Grand Trunk railway, which arrived in 1855. Located at the western end of the former Soulanges Canal, opened in 1899, the municipality today focuses on its family-friendly setting, its lake access and its bike path.
