Mirabel was created in 1971 through the merger of several municipalities and large-scale expropriations to make room for the international airport, which opened in 1975. A vast territory of about 486 km², it remains largely agricultural while also hosting a first-rate aeronautics hub around the airport. Its former villages, such as Saint-Janvier, Saint-Canut, Sainte-Scholastique and Saint-Benoît, each have their own character. The city has seen strong population growth, driven by families settling in its newer neighbourhoods.
