Living in Brownsburg-Chatham

Brownsburg-Chatham extends over nearly 250 km² between the Ottawa River and the mountains, just west of Lachute. Chatham Township, proclaimed in 1799, honours William Pitt, 1st Earl of Chatham, while Brownsburg recalls George Brown, who received a tract of land on the Rivière du Nord-Ouest in 1818 and built a sawmill and a gristmill there. In the late 19th century, an explosives company set up there, and the workers formed the nucleus of the town around the plant. Brownsburg and Chatham merged in 1999, and in 2024 the town became Quebec's 48th Village-relais.
