Lachute owes its name to the waterfall on the Rivière du Nord, around which settlers from Vermont and Scotland founded “The Chute Settlement” toward the end of the 18th century. The arrival of the Montreal–Ottawa railway around 1870 and the river's hydraulic power made it an industrial centre, with the Ayers woollen mill and the J.C. Wilson paper mill. In 1966, the town merged with Ayersville, the woollen mill village. The seat of the MRC d'Argenteuil, Lachute has preserved a built heritage with Anglo-Saxon influences and a population that is both French- and English-speaking.

The Lachute market, which began in the 1950s as an auction for horses and farmers, still draws visitors every Tuesday on Route 148.
The Hôpital de Lachute (Centre multiservices de santé et de services sociaux d'Argenteuil) and the industrial parks make the city the services hub of the MRC.
Agricultural fair
Originating from an agricultural society founded in 1825-1826 and held in Lachute since 1886, this fair bills itself as the oldest in Quebec and the second oldest in Canada. It takes place every year in early July and pays tribute to the agricultural traditions of Argenteuil.
