Living in Rigaud

The seigneury of Rigaud was granted in 1732 to the Rigaud de Vaudreuil brothers, sons of Governor Philippe de Rigaud de Vaudreuil, and the city takes its name from it. Rigaud became a stopover for lumberjacks and log drivers, and later a port for shipping timber and grain to Montreal. Collège Bourget was founded there in 1850, and today's city was created in 1995 from the merger of the City of Rigaud and the Parish of Sainte-Madeleine-de-Rigaud. Between Lac des Deux Montagnes, the Rigaud river and Mont Rigaud, it combines village life, farmland and large wooded areas all the way to the Ontario border.

Sanctuaire Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes in Rigaud

A place of pilgrimage

In 1874, Brother Ludger Pauzé, a Saint-Viateur cleric at the Collège Bourget, placed a small statue of Our Lady of Lourdes in a crevice of Mont Rigaud; the open-air shrine that grew from it now offers a grotto, chapels and a view of the region. Developed trails lead to the champ des guérets, the field of rounded stones that feeds the local legend.
