Verchères takes its name from its first seigneur, François Jarret de Verchères, and is known for Madeleine de Verchères, who defended the fort against an Iroquois attack in 1692. The town stretches along the St. Lawrence River, crossed from east to west by Route 132. Its old village of narrow streets preserves a remarkable built heritage. Verchères is also the hometown of several notable figures, including composer Calixa Lavallée and former premier Bernard Landry.
