Varennes dates back to 1672, when René Gaultier, seigneur of Varennes, received land grants from Intendant Jean Talon, and it obtained city status in 1972. On the banks of the St. Lawrence, it is the birthplace of Saint Marguerite d'Youville, whose shrine stands next to the Sainte-Anne basilica. Since the 1970s, the city has also developed an industrial and scientific hub, with the Hydro-Québec Research Institute (IREQ) and CanmetENERGY. Both families and workers from these sectors live here.

The shrine, on rue Sainte-Anne, includes a museum with large stained-glass windows and the Romanesque-Byzantine-style Sainte-Anne basilica, consecrated in 1888, where Saint Marguerite d'Youville rests. It is a must-see visit to understand the history of Varennes and that of the first Canadian-born saint.
