Saint-Amable was established as a parish in 1913 from three neighbouring parishes and is named after Amable de Riom, a popular saint in New France. Located between the St. Lawrence and the Richelieu, it was long known for potato growing, which was halted in 2006 by the discovery of the golden nematode and has gradually resumed with resistant varieties. Today the city combines residential areas and agricultural land. It attracts many families who work elsewhere on the South Shore.
