The territory of Sainte-Julie was part of the parish of Sainte-Anne-de-Varennes before being recognized as a municipality in the mid-19th century; it obtained city status in 1971. Its development accelerated after the construction of Highway 20 in the 1960s, and it is now crossed by Highways 20 and 30 and Route 229. It is the most populous city in the MRC de Marguerite-D'Youville. Many families and commuters who use the exo terminal live here.
