Contrecœur takes its name from Antoine Pécaudy de Contrecœur, an officer of the Carignan-Salières regiment who was granted a seigneury in 1672 and settled here with pioneers. The town stretches along the St. Lawrence River, facing the islands of Contrecœur, which are protected as a national wildlife area. The economy has long been based on steel, with the ArcelorMittal facilities. The Port of Montreal began construction of a container terminal here in 2026.
