Living in Saint-Hyacinthe

Saint-Hyacinthe developed along the Yamaska River, in the former seigneury of Maska, granted in 1748. In 1753, Jacques-Hyacinthe Simon dit Delorme acquired the seigneury and renamed it after his patron saint. Incorporated as a town in 1850 and then as a “cité” in 1857, it absorbed La Providence, Saint-Joseph and Douville in 1976, followed by Sainte-Rosalie, Saint-Thomas-d'Aquin, Saint-Hyacinthe-le-Confesseur and Notre-Dame-de-Saint-Hyacinthe in the mergers of the early 2000s. Nicknamed Canada's agri-food technopole, it is home to the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the Université de Montréal, the only French-language veterinary school in North America, as well as the Institut de technologie agroalimentaire du Québec (ITAQ).
