Mont-Saint-Hilaire developed at the foot of the mountain of the same name, designated in 1978 as the first UNESCO biosphere reserve in Canada. A former seigneury granted to Jean-Baptiste Hertel de Rouville in 1694, the city was the birthplace of notable artists such as Ozias Leduc and Paul-Émile Borduas. Orchards, cideries and residential neighbourhoods are spread across the mountainside and the banks of the Richelieu. The commuter train's terminal station also makes it a city appreciated by daily commuters.
