McMasterville was born in 1917 to house the workers of Canadian Explosives Limited, an explosives factory that operated until 1998; the city is also named after the company's first president, William McMaster. On the west bank of the Richelieu, it faces Mont-Saint-Hilaire and Otterburn Park. Its compact territory, crossed by Route 116 and the railway, is mostly residential. Families and daily commuters live here, drawn by the exo station that opened in 2000.
