Acton Vale takes its name from the former Township of Acton, proclaimed in 1806 and named after a locality in Middlesex, England; the word “Vale,” evoking a small valley, was added around 1852. The area opened up with the arrival, in 1850, of the railway linking Montreal to Portland, Maine. A copper mine discovered around 1855 made the town well known in the 19th century. On January 26, 2000, the parish municipality of Saint-André-d'Acton merged with the town, which is now the seat of the MRC d'Acton.
