Granted as a seigneury in 1672 to the seigneur de La Valtrie, Lavaltrie saw its first settlers arrive around 1675, and today's town was born in 2001 from the merger of the parish of Saint-Antoine-de-Lavaltrie and the village of Lavaltrie. Its old village runs along the St. Lawrence River by the chemin du Roy, with its Victorian homes, its church and its wharf. The town is also known as the place where Honoré Beaugrand's famous chasse-galerie legend begins. Many families and people who take Highway 40 to work live here.
