A site frequented by the St. Lawrence Iroquoians for some 5,000 years, Lanoraie was a stopover on the chemin du Roy and later an active port and shipyard in the 19th century, connected to Joliette by rail. Tobacco growing then shaped the agricultural landscape for decades. The current municipality was born in 2000 from the merger of Saint-Joseph-de-Lanoraie and Lanoraie-d'Autray, and since 2009 it has protected the architectural charm of its village core. Families, retirees and commuters live here, wanting the countryside close to the river.

The village centre, the church and presbytery, the Faust house (1860) and the L'Escale-du-Roy reception centre bear witness to the chemin du Roy's past as a stagecoach stop.
Museum
This maritime museum and café on rue Notre-Dame tells the epic story of the “cageux,” the raftsmen who guided timber rafts down the river, with an exhibit, a film and a reconstructed raft. A lovely way to understand the maritime past of Lanoraie.
