L'Assomption is built along the bends of the L'Assomption river, which Indigenous peoples called “Outaragasipi,” the river that winds. First known as Saint-Pierre-du-Portage, it was a prosperous village in the 19th century, known for the ceinture fléchée and for the Collège de l'Assomption, founded in 1832. The city merged with the parish in 1992 and then with Saint-Gérard-Majella in 2000, giving it a territory that is both urban and agricultural. There is also a constituent college of the Cégep régional de Lanaudière.

Heritage building and performance venue
Built in several phases starting in 1811 and designated a heritage site in 1973, it is said to be the oldest county courthouse in Quebec. Today it houses a small performance hall devoted to comedy, music and emerging culture.
