Sainte-Sophie is named after Sophie Raymond Masson, lady of Terrebonne, who granted land to settlers starting in 1847. From 1821, Scottish and Irish settlers had established themselves along the Rivière Jourdain, and then Jewish families from Eastern Europe developed farming and summer vacationing in the early 20th century. In 2000, Sainte-Sophie and the village of New Glasgow merged, recovering the original territory. Having gone from a farming community to a semi-urban one, the municipality now attracts families looking for more space.
