Prévost was born in 1973 from the merger of Shawbridge, Lesage and the former municipality of Prévost. Shawbridge takes its name from William Shaw, who settled in Abercromby Township in 1847, and from its bridge over the Rivière du Nord. The arrival of the Canadian Pacific in 1892 turned it into a summer and winter resort destination. Today the city attracts families and outdoor enthusiasts who want the nature of the Laurentians without being far from the services of Saint-Jérôme.

Nature and hiking
The cliffs of Prévost, in the Mont Shaw area, are among the closest climbing sites to Montreal, and a network of trails leads to lookouts over the valley. The Comité régional pour la protection des falaises, a volunteer organization, looks after the nature reserve and its trails.
