Settled starting in 1836 by families in search of farmland, the parish of Saint-Jean-de-Matha was founded in 1852 and the municipality was incorporated in 1855. The territory shifts from the farmland of the plain to the wooded hills of the Laurentians, with their maple forests, Lac Noir and Mont Pain de Sucre. The village, crossed by Route 131 north of Joliette, attracts families, retirees and outdoor enthusiasts who want the countryside without straying far from services.
