Rawdon, the seat of the MRC de Matawinie, sits on the southern edge of the Canadian Shield. The township, created in 1799, first welcomed Irish settlers, then French Canadians starting in 1844 and, after the First World War, families who came from Russia, Ukraine and Belarus. Since the early 20th century, the railway and the lake have made it a cherished summer destination, and many period cottages have become permanent residences. The population continues to grow every summer with the camps and cottages.
