Saint-Paul developed starting in 1748 along the Rivière L'Assomption, and then the Rivière Ouareau, with settlers coming mainly from L'Assomption and Saint-Sulpice. Incorporated as a municipality in 1855 under the name Conversion-de-Saint-Paul, it adopted its current name in 1954. The Rivière L'Assomption marks its southeastern boundary up to the confluence with the Ouareau. Its population grew by 11.5% between 2016 and 2021, driven by families drawn by the proximity of Joliette and Highway 31.
