Crabtree developed along the Ouareau River, a tributary of the L'Assomption River, after Edwin Crabtree bought land there in 1905 to build a paper mill harnessing hydraulic power. The post office opened the following year under the name Crabtree Mills; the mill, destroyed by fire in 1912, was rebuilt within a year. Today, Produits Kruger still operates a mill in Crabtree. Located just minutes from Joliette, the town attracts families and workers looking for more space and proximity to nature.
