Marieville occupies part of the former seigneury of Monnoir, granted to Claude de Ramezay in 1708, in the middle of the agricultural plain of Rouville. It became a city in 1905 and in 2000 merged back with the parish of Sainte-Marie-de-Monnoir, from which it had separated in the 19th century. Agriculture remains its main economic activity, and the city serves as a service hub for the neighbouring rural municipalities. It attracts families, retirees and first-time buyers who want a full-service town within a reasonable distance of the metropolis.
