Richelieu sits on the east bank of the river of the same name, across from Chambly. A hydroelectric plant operated there starting in 1899, and remains of those facilities can still be seen from the shore. The current city was born in 2000 from the merger of Richelieu and Notre-Dame-de-Bonsecours. Its population grew by nearly 10% between the 2016 and 2021 censuses.
