Carignan surrounds the city of Chambly and is divided into two parts, on either side of the Chambly Basin. Its name, adopted in 1965, honours the Carignan-Salières regiment, whose soldiers built forts along the Richelieu starting in 1665. The territory is made up of small residential hamlets surrounded by farmland growing mainly corn, wheat and soybeans, and includes several islands, among them Île Goyer. Families and people commuting to Longueuil and Montreal settle here for the space and the proximity of Highways 10 and 35.
