Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu is the main city of the Haut-Richelieu, born around Fort Saint-Jean, built in 1666 on the banks of the Rivière Richelieu. Since 2001, the present-day city has brought together the former municipalities of Saint-Jean, Iberville, Saint-Luc, L'Acadie and Saint-Athanase. It is home to a cégep, the Collège militaire royal de Saint-Jean, a Canadian Armed Forces garrison and the Hôpital du Haut-Richelieu. Families, military personnel, students, retirees and people who commute daily to Montreal all cross paths here.
