Crossed from south to north by the Yamaska River, Saint-Césaire was first called Burtonville before the parish was founded in 1833. In the 19th century, its Saturday farmers' market drew merchants even from Montreal. Young Alfred Bessette, the future Brother André, lived there from 1854 to 1860, and the band Harmonium recorded the album L'Heptade there in 1976. Today the city describes itself as an industrial, agricultural and craft centre surrounded by fertile land.
