LaSalle is named after the explorer René-Robert Cavelier de La Salle and was incorporated as a city in 1912, when its territory was still occupied by orchards and farmland. Bordered by the St. Lawrence River to the south and the Lachine Canal to the north, it became a borough of Montreal in 2002. The Fleming Mill, built in 1827, remains its symbol. There are both established residential areas and newer buildings near the water, as well as a commercial hub around Angrignon.
