Living in Cookshire-Eaton

Cookshire-Eaton occupies the territory of the former Eaton Township, founded in 1800 along the Eaton River, where the Abenaki already set up their camps. Around 1793, the American Josiah Sawyer settled near the river, giving his name to Sawyerville, while Cookshire pays tribute to John Cook, who arrived at the same time; the city of Cookshire was officially founded in 1892. Eaton Corner is among the oldest village centres in the region, and it was there that Canada's first surgery using anesthesia took place in 1847. The present-day city was born in 2002 from the merger of Cookshire, Eaton Township and Sawyerville. The seat of the MRC du Haut-Saint-François, it combines heritage villages, farmland and forests.
