Living in Compton

Compton was founded in 1796 by the pioneer Jesse Pennoyer, and since 1999 the current municipality has included the former village of Compton Station. Mostly English-speaking for a long time, the population became mostly French-speaking in the early 20th century, notably with the arrival of families from the Beauce. Louis S. St-Laurent, Prime Minister of Canada, was born here. The territory, crossed by the Rivière Coaticook, is known for its orchards and its agri-food producers.
