Founded in 1667, Lachine is one of the three oldest parishes on the Island of Montreal; its name is said to ironically recall the expedition of Cavelier de La Salle, who was searching for the route to China. The opening of the Lachine canal in 1825 and then the arrival of the railway in 1847 made it a major industrial hub. Made a borough in 2002, it now combines Vieux-Lachine, its waterfront parks on Lac Saint-Louis and the vast Lachine-Est eco-neighbourhood project. Families, retirees and outdoor enthusiasts drawn to the water meet here.
