First called Belisle's Mills, after the owner of a sawmill, Val-David became a village municipality in 1921 and takes its name from Louis-Athanase David and his father Laurent-Olivier David. The village attracted artists, such as the poet Gaston Miron and the double bassist Charlie Biddle, and has kept a strong cultural identity, notably with the 1001 Pots pottery exhibition every summer. Its rock walls have made it a well-known climbing destination in eastern Canada. Artisans, families, outdoor enthusiasts and retirees live here.
