Settled starting in 1849, Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts took off with the arrival of the railway in 1892, when sanatoriums and rest homes were established: the pure mountain air was believed to help cure tuberculosis. Wealthy Montreal families then built residences on the shores of Lac des Sables, which remains the heart of the city. Today it is a regional service centre with the Centre hospitalier Laurentien, elementary and high schools and a lively shopping centre. Families, health and service workers, retirees and many seasonal residents live here.
