Ville de Mont-Royal was born from a Canadian Northern Railway project that developed a model town to finance the tunnel under Mount Royal, which opened in 1918. Incorporated in 1912, it was designed by urban planner Frederick Gage Todd according to garden city principles. Its plan was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 2008. Mostly families live in the residential areas, while the west side is home to shops and businesses along the main thoroughfares.

Park
At the corner of Laird and Graham boulevards, Connaught Park is the heart of the town plan, and its roses are its signature. Since 1985, the rose garden has borne the name of Pierre Elliott Trudeau, the Member of Parliament for the Mont-Royal riding from 1965 to 1984.
