Montréal-Est was founded in 1910 by Joseph Versailles, who imagined it as a garden city. Starting in 1915, a first refinery set up there, followed by several others that made it Canada's main refining centre. Most closed in the 1980s, but the territory remains heavily industrial. A residential core is home to a small population, surrounded by the districts of eastern Montreal.
