Anjou was incorporated as a city in 1956, after separating from the parish of Saint-Léonard-de-Port-Maurice, and quickly went from farmland to residential suburb. Having become a Montreal borough in 2002, it is still often called “Ville d'Anjou.” Its territory combines residential areas such as Chaumont, Haut-Anjou and Anjou-sur-le-Lac with a vast industrial sector that occupies about 40% of its area. Families, retirees and industrial workers live side by side here.
